Music, Money and The Recording Artist.

 

Objectives:

  • Introduce students to the ARTIST OBLIGATIONS in every Recording Contract.
  • Look at and define each clause and evaluate its importance to both the artist and the record label.
  • Be able to UNDERSTAND, EVALUATE and NEGOTIATE each clause to effectively construct a basic recording contract.
  • Incorporate business principles of Negotiation into how it works inside of the Record side of the business.

 

Mogul Monday

5 min. – Warm Up

1.      Have questions on the board that review Monday’s lesson. Students will silently complete the question as it as I take attendance. 

§  What OBLIGATIONS do you have in your life?

10 min. –Mogul of the Day- Introduction to JIMMY IOVINE

1.      Discuss what Jimmy Iovine’s Importance to music

2.      Discuss Why Jimmy Iovine is considered a Mogul

60 min. – Teaching –Defining OBLIGATION in our DAILY LIVES

1.      The legal and cultural definition of OBLIGATION

2.      Discuss the different OBLIGATIONS in our lives.

20 min. –   Group Activity “The OBLIGATION of my Life”

1.      List ALL of the Obligations that you have in your life. Consider School, Home, Activities, Church, etc..

2.      List the consequences if you don’t meet your OBLIGATIONS.

3.      List the benefits if you do meet your OBLIGATIONS

5 min. – Closing / Shape Up Review/ Homework

10min. – Technology Time

1.      Have questions on the board that review Monday’s lesson. Students should silently complete them as you take attendance.  Suggested examples:

15 min. – Introduction / Artist Obligation

1.      Read Billboard an artist signing their deal

2.      Talk about what they are responsible for.

3.      Pass out Handouts and Textbooks.

 

60 min. –   Teaching Time

1.      Jigsaw READING and TEACHING.

2.      Q&A on Artist Obligations

15 min. – Grade last week’s Project and give individual feedback

10 min. – Closing / Homework

1.      Watch Billboard Top 50 Songs and Top 20 Album YouTube & Discuss.  Suggested examples:

§  Who has been on the Charts consistently for the last 7 weeks?

45 min. – Review Artist Obligations Notes. Q&A

1.      Discuss & Review Notes of Artist Obligations

2.      Review for Weekly Quiz

25 min. – Allow Students to Make up missing work– “Make Up Time”

45 min.   – Graffiti Walk- “Identify the OBLIGATION”

1.      Hand out sample record contracts to each group.

2.      Students have to identify AND explain all of the Artist OBLIGATIONS in the deal.

3.      Each group will prepare their project to present to the class.

5 min. – NO Shape Up Review/ Closing / Homework

1.      Homework –  Remind students to study for quiz on Friday

1.      Choose You Partner (Record Label vs. Artist)

2.      Negotiate the 8 Clauses That Were Taught

3.      Agree on all 8 Clauses and each party signs off on the deal

15 min. – Group Presentations

1.      Each Group Will Present their Finding to The Class

5 min. – Closing / Shape Up Review/ Homework

1.      Work in group to analyze how the different Terms and Royalties are important in a Record Deal.

2.      Look at the Term & Artist Royalty Clauses that we have studied.

3.       On a Poster Board, LIST OUT EACH TERM & ARTIST ROYALTY CLAUSE

4.      Negotiate each clause. List your conclusions on the poster board.

               5 mins – Closing / Homework

1.      Review the conclusions from Wednesday negotiation with discuss them your partner.

2.      Hang each poster board up around the room

3.      Spend 7 mins giving at each poster giving constructive advice on their findings and where they could’ve added something.

4.      When you get back to your own poster, review the comments make any necessary adjustments.

5 min. – NO Shape Up Review/ Closing / Homework

1.      Homework –  Remind students to study for quiz on Friday
